Getting To and Around Swedish Lapland

Flying into Swedish Lapland will likely see you landing at Lulea or Kiruna airports, with both Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian arriving regularly. Once there you’ll find it to be big and remote, but the train routes are popular, efficient and wonderfully scenic. If you want to find the truly hidden gems and wild spots untouched by tourism, you’ll need to travel by bus or hire your own car to get around.

How to say ‘I do’ in Sweden

Getting married in Sweden as an international couple, you have the option of a religious, civil or symbolic ceremony. For a legal civil ceremony you will be required to attend a meeting at the closest office to process your paperwork in advance, before meeting with your celebrant who will conduct your legal ceremony in Sweden. A certificate of non-impediment is required, along with your wedding application, passport copies and birth certificates in some cases.  It is possible at some locations to have a religious ceremony conducted by a local priest too. I will personally assist you in preparing your marriage paperwork, so don’t spend another minute worrying about this part!

If you prefer a symbolic ceremony your options are endless! The culture of Swedish Lapland is centered around nature and freedom, so making the most of its staggering mountains, untamed forests, meandering archipelagos and dramatic lakes is a great option for exchanging your vows.

Where to stay

Your accommodation options in Swedish Lapland will be rustic, romantic and surrounded by nature in its finest forms. They are luxurious and exclusive and serenity, relaxation and excellent hosting are their signatures.

Loggers Lodge

Loggers Lodge is a charming, luxurious wood cabin with its nearest neighbour 5 kilometres of forest away. It is truly a haven in the wilderness, and you’ll find exceptional hospitality and an impressive array of activities on your doorstep. Their spa, with hot tub under the stars and private masseuse, is the perfect way to wind down after a busy day of wilderness activities, including tying the knot! The Lodge even has its own bridge over the Bodtraska stream where you could have your marriage ceremony or dine in style.

Arctic Bath

The Arctic Bath is one of my absolute favourite accommodation options! If you’re getting married in Sweden and want something totally unique, this could be perfect for you. Set on the shores of a lake this is your own little bit of luxury, totally connected to and immersed in its natural surroundings. Here you can take a cold open-air bath to refresh and rejuvenate, before booking a personal treatment in the spa. You can even hire your own little tent tipi to privately hold your wedding ceremony, and dine on sustainable local produce for your wedding dinner.

Room rates start from around €300 – €800 per night, with the more expensive suites housing multiple floors. Their dinner rate is €85 per adult, and you can add handpicked seasonal activities to your stay from €150-200 per person. This means you and your wedding guests can pick and choose your adventures!

Ice and Light Village

In a small town the Ice and Light Village overlooks the Kalix river, with its cluster of modern cottages in igloo-shaped shells. Comfort, serene surroundings and adventure activities on your doorstep are the highlights of this accommodation option!

Fjellborg Homestead & Kennel Lodges

Close to Kiruna you’ll find beautiful lodges with dog sledding packages; a great family friendly option for multiple nights if you or your guests have little ones! Your airport transfers, outdoor gear, meals and beverages are all included in the cost. The Fjellborg lodgings are a home away from home; you’ll find them spacious and inviting, and the convenience of the package makes it a fantastic wedding trip option!

Activities & Experiences

Depending on the time of year you are getting married in Sweden, you’ll find an array of nature-based activities to have your first adventures together as a married couple! The country is also famous for spas and relaxation, so whether you’re seeking thrills or serenity you’ll find your perfect pre- and post-wedding activities here.

In the winter you can take advantage of the still-prevalent Sami culture, with culinary experiences and ice fishing on the agenda. Make some new four-legged friends with reindeer encounters and husky sledding trips, and if you’re a lover of the white stuff you can opt for snowshoeing and snowmobiling too! At the right time of the year you can chase the Northern Lights too, for a Scanindavian experience you’ll never stop talking about.

Don’t be put off getting married in Sweden in the summer months though! Midnight sun, outdoor dining experiences, river swimming and mountain hiking are all draws to Swedish Lapland this time of year. Food is also a big part of the culture here, and you’ll find everything from reindeer meat cooked over an open fire to gourmet dishes served by top class chefs in exclusive restaurants. This means your options for your wedding dinner range from a private kota or tipi to dining in an upscale restaurant!
